Case Study
Grease Degradation & Solids Reduction
– UK based meat processor producing mainly turkey
and ham were experiencing problems associated with grease
degredation & solids reduction. This processor
had limited effluent processing capability on site and
discharged wastes directly into the local sewer network.
The local water authority complained of blockages in
the sewers due to accumulation of grease and fat from
the processing company. Screening was introduced to
remove the solids but the screens would often block
with grease and fat. Every week 2m3 of greasy solids
was removed for disposal!
An aerated biological treatment unit was placed in line
before the screen and BioTreat bacteria was dosed daily,
some thirty metres away where the effluent first entered
the site drainage system. After two weeks of operation
significant improvements were observed. The screens
no longer blocked, every month only 1m3 of solids were
removed for disposal and the suspended solids in the
effluent was reduced by 90%. The BioTreat treatment
had significant benefits, it both reduced the costs
associated with the grease removal and also reduced
the water treatment charges from the local water authority.
