Case Study
Fast Food Restaurant - Trials were
conducted using BioTreat’s Liquid S45 formula
at a fast
food restaurant that was already using a bioreactor.
It was estimated that the restaurant served approximately
600-1000 meals per day. The bioreactor doses into the
drain lines, which then in turn flow into a pump sump.
Grease problems had always been associated with the
pumping station (i.e. pump failure, float switches,
rancid odours, blockages etc.) which resulted in high
maintenance costs for the restaurant, as the sump required
cleaning every 6 months.
A bioreactor had been installed at the fast food restaurant
for two years and various bio-treatment products have
been trialed during this time, although none had been
successful. This had been attributed to the harsh environment
in the pump sump making it difficult for the grease
degrading bacteria to survive. Such conditions included
high temperatures; high levels of detergent and other
cleaning agents and large variations in pH.
The photographs show significant changes in the grease
content of the sump. Photo 1 was taken before BioTreat’s
Liquid S45 formula was introduced and shows a large
amount of grease floating on the water. Photo 2, which
was taken one month after into the BioTreat trial, shows
considerable changes in the nature of the cap with large
areas of clear effluent being observed. There was also
no smell being emitted from the sump.

Photo 2. Pump sump 1 month after
treatment.
The success of BioTreat’s bio-fluid can be attributed
to the fact that it is multi-strained and therefore
has a range of bacteria that can survive under harsh
conditions, similar to the environment found in the
pump sump.
Daily Flow: 10 m3
