Case Study
BOD & Grease Degradation –
A UK poultry
processing plant in Norfolk. This plant treated
approximately 90m3 of effluent an hour and operated
two shifts of 10 hours each. The plant was divided into
two sections, a cooked meats section and slaughter house/meat
preparation area.
The processing company operated a full effluent treatment
plant comprising balance tanks, a DAF unit, biological
filters and a Vitox unit. Chemical treatment was required
to make sure the effluent discharged was within consent.
The company was investigating the expansion of the
poultry processing capacity of the plant. They were
also reviewing their effluent treatment processes which
included the possible introduction of a new biological
treatment to improve plant efficiencies.
BioTreat trials commenced. The results included a significant
reduction in the blockages experienced in the drains
due to reduced grease and fat deposits, and reduced
odours. The performance of the DAF unit also improved
and the filter beds saw reduced solids on the bed. Initially,
the BOD leaving the plant increased, however after three
weeks the BOD also reduced.
